Wulan Koagouw is a pioneering Indonesian ecotoxicologist who rose to prominence thanks to her groundbreaking research on pharmaceutical contamination at the Jakarta Bay.
Widely influential, her research was ultimately used by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) as a scientific guideline for the Jakarta administration in addressing industrial methodologies related to wastewater management, carried out by a dedicated task force of 21 governmental and academic entities. Wulan obtained a Master of Research in Biosciences and later a PhD in Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Brighton, where she produced more innovative ecological research underpinned by intellectual freedom and interdisciplinary collaboration, a distinct approach that has further set her apart, especially as a female scientist, and resulted in accolades and achievements such as the 2022 National Geographic Explorer Award, serving as the sole Indonesian female scientist representative at the 2023 HOPE Meeting with Nobel Laureates, and being featured in British Council’s Women in Science for her outstanding scientific trajectory.
