The "Landscape of University Language Centres in Indonesia" study digs into the vital role played by Language Centres (LCs) in Indonesian universities, especially in empowering academics and students to engage more effectively in global science and knowledge networks. Commissioned to examine the current landscape, this report aims to provide insights for key stakeholders, including LC managers, higher education institutions (HEIs), local governments, and policymakers, to enhance the planning and implementation of English language education in the Indonesian HE sector.

The study outlines four key objectives: mapping LCs across the country, assessing their national capacity to serve both universities and the public, conducting a SWOT analysis on a sample of LCs, and evaluating scholarship preparation programs such as the LPDP Language Enrichment Program.

Findings from the report highlight the pivotal role LCs play in enhancing English proficiency among Indonesia’s academic community. By offering specialized courses such as English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and scholarship preparation programs, LCs enable students and lecturers to access international opportunities—such as scholarships, conferences, and academic publications—more easily. Additionally, LCs contribute to teacher training at the local level, aiming to address disparities in pre-university English education.

However, the study also identifies significant challenges faced by LCs. With only 11% of HEIs operating LCs and limited staff numbers, their reach remains constrained. Scaling up their operations, with increased material and professional support, is crucial for expanding their impact on both the higher education sector and local communities.

This report offers valuable insights for stakeholders seeking to strengthen English language education across Indonesia, ensuring broader participation in global academic networks.
