ABOUT JAMES COUSINS AND THE SHOW

“Intricate, beautifully danced…. Cousins is a rising star.”

The Independent

In the space of a few short years, James Cousins has achieved more than many choreographers manage in a lifetime. A graduate of London Contemporary Dance School, he has moved seamlessly from performing work to creating it, quickly finding himself in demand with dance companies at home and abroad. In 2011, having launched his own company the same year, he became the first winner of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures Choreographer Award. Cousins has already been commissioned by Scottish Ballet, the National Ballet of Chile and the National Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore; and had his work presented at The Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. Cousins also has a wealth of performance experience under his belt, including a world tour of Bourne’s famous all male Swan Lake.

Inspired by Haruki Murakami’s dark but beautifully tender novel, Norwegian Wood, Cousins has choreographed Without Stars and There We Have Been. Taking the themes of love, loss and friendship from the Japanese story, and adding his own unique quality to them, he has created a rich and powerful double-bill. Focusing on the first half of the story and the development of the relationship between the novel’s protagonist and his late best friend's girlfriend, Cousins presents a daringly intimate glimpse into a secluded world of fragile dependency.
