Art Collection: Museum, from Private to Public

Day, Date: Friday, 28 August 2015

Time: 16:00 - 17:00 WIB

Speakers : Thomas J. Berghuis and Sally Goggin

Moderator : Enin Supriyanto

It is often mentioned in conversations amongst artists and curators that the dynamic development of contemporary art in Southeast Asia, particularly in the last decade, has a critical flaw: the lack of a professional museum infrastructure, beyond the important role of some university galleries and museums, some private initiates like the Jim Thompson Foundation, and some state-run museum institutions such as Singapore Art Museum in Singapore and Bangkok Art Culture Centre in Bangkok. The fact is that government support for modern and contemporary art in Southeast Asia in general is not as big as expected. Meanwhile Southeast Asia has witnessed the proliferation of private collectors building up substantial private collections of modern and contemporary art.

In the last few years, some private collectors have also started to build their own private museums. There are even signs that some private museums focus on having a strong public focus. Does this mean that the time is right to talk about new museums for the future in Southeast Asia? What type of roles should these museums perform? And can we start identifying possible models for private museums to operate for the public in Southeast Asia? What is the role of education for these new museums, and can we start identifying ways in linking these new museums to each other, and to museums across Asia; and across the globe? The panel will raise some indicators for new museums to be established in Indonesia, and together with cultural organizations, public and private initiatives from the basis of a new professional museum infrastructure to connect across Southeast Asia.
