Newton Fund is implementing PhD programme in Indonesia to address the following issues:
- Skills shortages in the research sector are most pronounced at PhD level (with 27% of researchers at universities having a PhD)
- Being the largest archipelago, Indonesia wants to develop its capacity in marine and maritime sciences
This Project will focus on the topic of Marine and Maritime research. The theme covers a wide variety of discipline from fundamental sciences and engineering to social sciences. Examples include: marine law, maritime sociology, shipbuilding, aquaculture, renewable energy, logistic, coastal communities, disaster management, etc.
This activity will lead to an increase in skilled researchers in areas of focus who will be key to Indonesia’s economic development. This cohort of well-trained human resources will allow Indonesia to make efficient use of its marine and maritime potential through research and innovations in these focus areas.
The Key Objectives
Within research areas relevant to development the PhD programme works to fulfill the following aims:
- Development of individual capacity through international training and development opportunities
